Turkey burgers, chips and salad

Turkey is normally a meat we, in Western cultures, associate with Christmas but it can be a delicious alternative to other meats all year round. We buy our meat from a local butchers called French’s Farm Shop Organic Butchers.

French’s source all the meat they buy in from local organic farmers. I understand that not everyone can afford to buy organic. However, you are buying meat whose living standards have been excellent and they have been treated well all their lives. Buying organic also means no pesticides or herbicides so this in turn will not affect our bodies. It’s better for us and the planet we live on.

Plus, eating organic turkey means you are guaranteed to get all of the health benefits from the meat. Turkey is an excellent source of iron, potassium and phosphorus. It is also a good source of vitamin B6 and niacin, which are both essential for the body’s energy production.

Eating turkey on a regular basis can help to lower cholesterol levels and it can help to keep insulin levels stable. Turkey contains the amino acid typtophan which produces serotonin and it plays an important role in strengthening the immune system. So eating turkey is not just for Christmas and eating it in these burgers is the number one way to increase your turkey consumption.

Equipment needed

  • Chopping board
  • Sharp Knife
  • Grater
  • Frying pan
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking tray

Ingredients

  • Turkey mince x 500g (preferably organic)

  • Leek x 1 medium
  • Courgette x 1 medium
  • Olive oil for pan and baking tray
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • Start by grating the courgette and set aside.
  • Chop the leek into 1/2 centimetre pieces.
  • Put the frying pan on a high heat and add a little olive oil.
  • Once the pan is hot, fry the leeks until soft and leave to cool for 5 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a bowl, season the turkey mince with salt and pepper.
  • Then add the grated courgette and fried leeks.
  • Mix together by hand if necessary.
  • Grab a piece of the mixture and make into four equal burgers.
  • Place in the baking tray and put in the preheated oven.
  • Cook for 25 – 30 minutes.
  • Once cooked, remove and serve with my sweet potato chips and a salad.

It’s a great meal for kids too. My son loves them and he will happily eat for a leftover lunch the next day. It’s a simple, quick and easy recipe to follow and for the whole family to enjoy.
