Sourdough Pizza Toast

Sourdough is my son & husband’s favourite bread. We buy it every week from the same stall in the high street. They love making cheese and pickle toasties on a Saturday for lunch. I enjoy them eating sourdough because the body can digest it easily. However, I do think that variety in our diet is good as well.

People have been making sourdough bread for centuries. Bread is said to be older than metal. Even before the stone age there is evidence to suggest our ancestors were eating and baking flat breads. It has been well documented that grinding stones would have been used to process grains probably to make flat bread.

The Egyptians were thought to be the first to have recorded making leavening bread. However, it is unclear about how this process happened. One of the oldest recipes for sourdough breads dates from 3700 BC and was made in Switzerland. Bread production relied on the use of sourdough as a leavening agent for many years. The use of baker’s yeast as a leavening agent dates back less than 150 years.

One of the main reasons we love sourdough is the fact that the process for making it takes a long time. As I have discovered since giving up sugar the slower the food takes to cook the better it is for the body.  Nowadays I believe the body finds it easier to digest sourdough because the bread has taken a long time to be produced. These sourdough pizza toasts are a great alternative to cheese sandwiches on a Saturday.

Sourdough Pizza Toast

Sourdough pizza toast is another one of my go to meals in the evening as well as being a Saturday lunch time meal. It’s quick, easy and simple. If the pesto is already made in the fridge then it’s even easier to produce in no time. My little family loves it and plates are normally cleaned by the end of the meal. If you do decide to try this meal, as always, enjoy!
