Three of the Five Natural Remedies for Fatigue

For many years now after my meals I will get the sudden urge to fall asleep. It’s normally anywhere between 1 to 2 hours after I have finished lunch. However, in recent months, it seems to have spread to breakfast and dinner too. Either that or I just haven’t noticed it until now.

All I know is it’s very annoying, especially when I have a four year old to look after on most days. In the future, I would like to go to see a nutritionist, but for now I have been looking at natural remedies to help with this problem. I have been doing a little bit of research on the topic and I have found a few great remedies that are helping me not to fall asleep in my breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Firstly, after each meal, I now get up and move around. I have found that being active after eating helps to aid my digestion and it stops that sleepy feeling. Exercise, like walking or doing the dishes, is a great way to get those digestive juices flowing. Yoga and running are also great ways to aid digestion. Although I wouldn’t recommend these immediately after a meal. Plus taking regular exercise is also a good way to stop you from falling asleep in your dinner.

Peppermint and Licorice Tea

As well as making sure I take regular exercise if I need an energy boost I now turn to herbal tea. Licorice tea is one of my favourites and it is a fantastic energy tonic. It’s great for people with low blood pressure and it has been known to help with nervous problems. It will help to increase energy levels and decrease exhaustion. Licorice tea helps the cortisol levels in the body which then eases symptoms of fatigue after meals.

Another herbal tea that I enjoy after food is peppermint. It’s a tea that is good for relieving and preventing stomach distress. Peppermint tea helps to move gas through your stomach and intestines after consuming a meal. Many herbalists recommend sipping on  this tea following a meal as it will stimulate bile through the digestive tract. It’s a process that helps the body digest food. Peppermint tea can help the body to absorb nutrients which may be key as to why it helps with fatigue. If you don’t like peppermint tea, then peppermint capsules are also readily available too.

Peppermint Oil

The third natural remedy that I have found helpful in the past few months is peppermint oil. It’s great for improving energy and it works in the same way as the tea. All I do is put a few drops on a tissue and breath deeply, inhaling the oil. Peppermint oil could also be used in an oil diffuser, or put in a a magnesium salt bath along with a couple of drops of thyme oil, which I like to do. A great way to relax and unwind while helping the body to digest. Spearmint is generally better for children.

Bone broth is another brilliant way to help alleviate the symptoms of fatigue. The amino acids such as proline and arglinine in bone broth all have anti-inflammatory effects which benefit the entire gut. Bone broth has been proven to help the body’s system improve. It contains high amounts of calcium, magnesium and lots of other nutrients that play an important part. Finally when all else fails, or I cannot do the above, deep breathing is my final remedy. The body responds well to deep breathing and it’s a great way to help the digestive system. When the body breathes air into the lungs, oxygen is absorbed into the blood stream. Blood is then pumped around the body by the heart which distributes oxygen to the cells helping the body to produce energy. Insufficient oxygen causes lower energy levels. Breathing out also helps to release carbon dioxide which is a bi-product of energy productions.

These are the five remedies that I have been testing in recent months and so far they have been working for me. However, if symptoms do come back I will seek the help of a nutritionist. I do think that my body is not absorbing nutrients effectively and it’s a problem that I feel I may need to look at in the future. At the moment, I don’t have the urge to take a nap after every meal thanks to these remedies. So in my book they are well worth a try.
